Son Yong-geun, Honorary Chairman of the Hanyang University Alumni Association, has donated 5 million won to support the development of his alma mater. Following his recent donation to his hometown, Gangjin County, from prize money he received for winning the prestigious ‘Korean Legal Culture Award,’ one of the highest honors in Korea’s legal community, Son has now extended his warm sharing to his alma mater, Hanyang University.
After passing the 17th National Judicial Examination in 1975 and completing the 7th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, Son was appointed as a judge in 1980. He went on to serve key positions within the judiciary, including Chief Judge of the High Court, President of the Administrative Court, and Director of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, dedicating himself to upholding judicial justice. After his retirement, he taught junior scholars at his alma mater's Law School as both a Distinguished Chair Professor and Special Merit Professor, and currently serves as an attorney at Dongin Law Group LLC.
From 2018 to 2024, Son led the Hanyang University Alumni Association as the chairman, revitalizing the organization. He also took the initiative to publish the nation’s first compendium of Supreme Court precedents in English, which was distributed to courts in more than 170 countries, thereby spreading Korean legal culture on the global stage. In addition, he spearheaded the translation of the Joseon High Court Rulings, contributing to the preservation of Korean judicial history.
Through his academic and civic engagements, Son has consistently contributed to legal scholarship and the cultural arts, embodying a strong sense of social responsibility. His recent donation once again exemplified the founding philosophy of Hanyang — ‘Love in Deed and Truth.’
