Hanyang University(Lee Ki-jeong as President) announced that it officially launched the ‘University Consortium for Basic and Convergent Education’ and held its inaugural general assembly on October 22 at the Paiknam Academic Information Center & Library International Conference Room on campus. This inaugural event brought together a collaborative network of 33 universities across Korea to strengthen basic and convergent education, presenting a new educational paradigm focused on quality innovation and mutual growth in higher education.
The ‘University Consortium for Basic and Convergent Education’ is led by Hanyang University, with participating universities collaboratively developing and running online courses. In particular, the consortium addresses the financial and infrastructural limitations of individual institutions by providing jointly developed foundational and convergent subjects through a shared platform, enabling member universities to access high-quality educational content without burden.
Since the ‘University Consortium for Basic and Convergent Education Inaugural Ceremony’ was held on April 24, a total of 33 universities have joined. Key initiatives include: Collaborative development of online foundational and convergent courses, Joint credit recognition processes and program operation, Faculty development training and seminar hosting, Establishment of performance assessment and feedback systems. Through these efforts, each member institution aims to solve common challenges in higher education, strengthening basic academic skills and solidifying substantive multidisciplinary education, by establishing a new collaborative model.
President Lee Ki-jeong of Hanyang University stated, “The goal of this consortium is to build an educational ecosystem based on sharing and cooperation, not competition among universities. Students will be able to receive the highest-quality foundational and convergent education, regardless of their region or institution, and faculty members will collaboratively enhance educational quality through joint research and curriculum development.”
Choi Hyun-joon, Director of the RISE Project at Mokpo National Maritime University, added, “With this assembly, we hope to expand beyond the boundaries of individual institutions and build a national ecosystem for basic and convergent education as a whole.”
The ‘University Consortium for Basic and Convergent Education’ is a nationwide shared educational platform created by 33 universities, based on the philosophy that “solid basic education enables convergence, and such convergence fosters creativity and innovation.” Hanyang University aims, through this collaboration, to establish a sustainable higher education ecosystem where each university jointly utilizes educational resources and students experience deeper and broader academic learning.
