On December 23, Professor Seo Jong-won of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Hanyang University was selected for the ‘2025 Top 100 National Research & Development Achievements,’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT. While construction sites often evoke images of manual labor, Professor Seo envisions a future dominated by automation of construction and robotics. Currently serving as the lead researcher for the Intelligent Construction Equipment Control Technology development project, part of the government's Smart Construction Technology Development Project, he presents digital solutions to overcome industry crises such as the shortage of skilled workers due to the aging society and the perception of construction as a ‘3D’(Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous) industry.

to making intelligent decisions
The core technologies selected for the Top 100 Achievements are the BIM-GIS-based Intelligent Earthwork Control Platform and C-Map(Construction-Map). These function as the ‘digital brain’ and the ‘eyes’ of the construction site, respectively. While traditional sites relied on the intuition of managers to operate equipment, Professor Seo’s control platform visualizes the site as a 3-dimensional digital map.
Through preliminary research conducted from 2014 to 2017, Professor Seo digitized the site by integrating ICT into construction equipment. If the previous research was about making the site ‘visible,’ this current research has evolved into an ‘intelligence’ stage where the system makes optimal decisions and moves equipment autonomously based on collected data.
The control platform developed by the team functions much like an airport control tower. It renders the entire site as a 3D digital map and, by combining AI and 5G technology, allows a controller inside a mobile control vehicle to direct numerous pieces of 모먼트 토토사이트 equipment remotely.
A particularly noteworthy technology is ‘C-Map,’ a navigation system dedicated to construction equipment. Unlike standard car navigation, C-Map reflects the characteristics of a construction site—where the terrain constantly changes due to digging and piling soil—in real-time.
Furthermore, while traditional methods could only react after an accident occurred, C-Map focuses on prevention. Professor Seo explained, "If a machine leaves its assigned working zone or approaches terrain with a risk of overturning, the system sends an immediate warning. It is a structure where the system constantly monitors safety so that we don't rely solely on human attention."

The process of merging civil engineering with IT, robotics, and communication technology was not easy. Professor Seo explained, "This award is the result of intense deliberation by experts who speak different professional 'languages' but worked together to solve actual problems in the field."
Professor Seo views automation of construction not as a replacement for jobs, but as a process of transforming construction into a high-value-added, high-tech industry. He concluded with a vision: "Automation technology will lead to a qualitative improvement in construction jobs as a core tool that assists field personnel. I will work towards completing a smart construction ecosystem where anyone can work safely using AI and robots."
