Professor Kim Hyung-sik’s research team at Hanyang University, in collaboration with Harvard University, has developed a next-generation nano-immunotherapy platform called ‘MyTai(Myeloid Cell-Targeted Immunostimulant Cocktail).’ The research was published in the October 2025 issue of internationally renowned journal ACS Nano, with Professor Kim as the first author.
Professor Kim has been researching immune engineering based on drug delivery. Especially, he has been developing a carbohydrate-based nanoparticle platform that controls immune cells precisely in human bodies. MyTai delivers therapeutics such as RNA, immune-activating small molecules, and proteins specifically to immune cells. This approach triggers effective immune responses not only in traditionally hard-to-treat ‘cold tumors’ but also in autoimmune and rare diseases.
Professor Kim’s research team began this study to address the limitations of existing cancer immunotherapies. Existing therapies do not work effectively in tumor environments where immune cells do not function properly.
The ‘tumor environment’ is a complex ecosystem created by the entanglement of blood vessels, immune cells, fibroblasts, nutrients, and signaling molecules surrounding cancer cells. Cancer cells grow by shaping this environment to their own advantage. As a result, the environment becomes suppressive so that immune cells lose their function, and even powerful drugs cannot reach the target cells. Professor Kim felt the need for a ‘new way of training immune cells directly’ as existing methods have limited treatment efficiency and began research on immune-cell-targeted nano-carriers to realize the training process.
MyTai, training the ‘commander cells’ of immune system

Currently, GLP toxicity evaluation, preclinical efficacy validation, and mass production process optimization are underway, and collaborative research with both domestic and international pharmaceutical companies is being pursued. Professor Kim stated, “Our long-term goal is to develop this into a customized immunotherapy platform tailored to each patient’s immune characteristics.”
“A study of questions rather than answers, Biomedical Science”
Professor Kim continues research to develop next-generation mRNA vaccines and immunotherapeutic nanovaccines based on his own nanoimmunology platform. In particular, he is designing a vaccine system that induces 실시간 해와 토토사이트 cells to effectively recognize and remember antigens in the tumor environment.
The goal is to form tertiary lymphoid structures around tumors, strengthen immune memory, and realize therapeutic vaccines that suppress recurrence in the long term. Professor Kim said, “Ultimately, I want to expand this to a universal immune-control vaccine platform that can be applied not only to cancer but also to infectious and autoimmune diseases.”
At the end of the interview, Professor Kim left a final message for Hanyang students who are trying to study biomedical science:
"Biomedical science is a convergent discipline that requires both understanding of life and engineering creativity. I think the essence of research is not about knowing the right answer, but about asking questions and exploring them on your own.
