On September 22, a research team led by Professor Yoo Hyoung-suk from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Hanyang University announced that it has developed a Wi-Fi-based wireless capsule endoscopy system by applying Integrated Sensing and Communication(ISAC), a core next-generation communication technology.
The team combined an ultra-wideband(UWB) implantable antenna with a Wi-Fi module, proving that capsule endoscopy can directly capture high-resolution images inside the human body and transmit them to devices outside. Experimental results confirmed stable performance with an average latency of less than 0.5 seconds and a packet loss rate below 9%, based on HD(1280×720) resolution at distances of maximum 5 meters.
This research marks the world’s first case of enabling real-time monitoring and remote diagnosis, surpassing the limitations of conventional capsule endoscopies, which required stored images to be retrieved after the device exits the body.
Professor Yoo Hyoung-suk stated, “By integrating next-generation communication technology with medical IoT, we have established a foundation that not only reduces discomfort for patients but also provides medical staff with real-time information. When combined with artificial intelligence analysis in the future, this technology will greatly contribute to early diagnosis and remote monitoring.”
This study was conducted with support from Hanyang University’s Beyond-G Global Frontier Research Center(Professor Kim Sun-woo as Director) and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation(IITP) through the project ‘Development of Miniaturized High-Efficiency Wireless Power Supply and Communication Technology for Implantable Medical Devices(RRC Radio Research Center).’ The research findings were published online on September 19 in the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (IF: 17.2, JCR Top 1%), a world-renowned journal in the field of next-generation communications.
The paper Integrated Sensing and Communication in Wireless Capsule Endoscopy lists doctoral student Usman and Dr. Ijaz Ali as co-first authors, with Professor Yoo Hyoung-suk serving as corresponding author.
