On August 26, Professor Roh Tae-woo of Hanyang University’s Department of International Studies, in collaboration with the world-renowned academic publisher Emerald Publishing, hosted the ‘Emerald Author Focus Group’ program at the International Building. The group was organized to explore key issues in academia, including the latest trends in international journal publishing, research ethics, the use of AI, and open access policies.

The 'Emerald Author Focus Group' is a program designed to bring researchers worldwide together to share publishing experiences, trends, and needs. This year’s discussions centered on specific topics such as publishing and research ethics, applications of AI in writing and peer review, the current state of open access policy  in Korea, and proposals for special issues and new publications. The event was regarded as a meaningful opportunity for domestic and international scholars to exchange perspectives and seek global standards for academic publishing.

The event featured key executives of Emerald Publishing for Asia–Pacific, including Wan Yat Seng (Regional Director, Malaysia), Sunwoo Choi (Business Manager, South Korea), and William Loh (Customer Success, Malaysia). Prominent scholars ranked among the world’s top 2%—Garry Tan Wei Han (UCSI University, Malaysia) and Hiram Ting (i-CATS University College, Malaysia)—also joined online, engaging in in-depth discussions on the future direction of international scholarly publishing and support measures for researchers. Their insights offered valuable guidance to help Korean scholars enhance their competitiveness in the global academia network.

Professor Roh stated, “This focus group was an important opportunity for Korean researchers to share both challenges and opportunities in international publishing and to collaborate with global publishers and academic leaders like Emerald. We need strategies to adapt to the evolving academic ecosystem, particularly in areas such as AI tools, ethics, and the expansion of open access.”

The event was deemed to hold both academic and practical significance, serving to strengthen researcher networks between Hanyang University and Emerald Publishing and establish a foundation for international collaboration. Both institutions plan to continue expanding cooperation with Korean researchers to enhance their impact in the global academic community.

Meanwhile, Professor Roh was recently appointed the first Korean editorial board member of the world-renowned SSCI journal Business Strategy and the Environment. He has published more than 190 papers in major SSCI-listed journals, including Journal of Business Ethics, Technovation, International Business Review, and Journal of International Management. Moreover, in 2024, he was named among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Stanford University, and in 2025, he received the “Editorial Contribution Award” from the global academic publisher Springer Nature for his role as Review Editor-in-Chief of the SSCI journal Asian Business & Management, further affirming his outstanding scholarship in international management and sustainable business.
