A memorial bench honoring the late Song Jae-sung (Class of ’50, Department of Civil Engineering), Chairman of Seongho Group, was unveiled on May 16 in the plaza in front of the Paiknam Library & Academic Information Center at Hanyang University’s Seoul Campus. Held on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of his passing, the ceremony commemorated his enduring dedication to Hanyang University.
Nurturing talent is a way of giving back by shaping the future
Chairman Song devoted his life to civil engineering, entrepreneurship, and educational philanthropy. From 2004 to 2006, he donated a total of 5.5 billion KRW to support the construction of the Jaeseong Civil Engineering Building and continued to contribute scholarship funds long afterward. His belief that “nurturing talent is the key to designing the future” remains deeply resonant among the Hanyang community. In recognition of his vision, the university installed a memorial bench on campus to offer a space of remembrance and inspiration.

The ceremony was attended by 12 people, including the late chairman’s family members and Hanyang University officials. Among the attendees were Song Chang-ho (eldest son and current Chairman of Seongho Group), Song Shin-hye (daughter and CEO of Hoseong Co., Ltd.), and Song Chang-hyun (younger son and Vice Chairman), along with President Lee Ki-jeong, Executive Vice President Chung Hyun-chul, Vice President for External Relations and Development Choi Joong-sub, and Professor Park Du-hee, Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The ceremony concluded with remarks from the family and university, followed by the unveiling of the bench and a moment of silence in remembrance.

What he left behind: a building that lights the way, a system that offers opportunity, and unwavering affection for the next generation.
Born in 1932 in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, Chairman Song earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and master’s degree in port engineering from Hanyang University. After serving in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Board of Audit and Inspection, and Korea Maritime and Port Administration, he went on to establish multiple enterprises, becoming one of Korea’s most prominent engineer-entrepreneurs. His ties to Hanyang extended beyond academics—he served as President of the Hanyang Alumni Association (2009–2010), chaired the university scholarship foundation, and was awarded the Proud Hanyang Alumnus Award in 2006.
The newly installed bench retraces the footsteps of his life and now stands as a place of rest and inspiration for future generations. Hanyang University plans to continue honoring the legacies of devoted alumni through similar commemorative spaces, keeping their spirit alive on campus.
