The Young Scientist Award was established in 1997 to enhance the social status and pride of scientists and to discover young researchers with outstanding development achievements and potential. Professor Jung was selected as a recipient in recognition of his research on 'Stretchable High-Frequency Technology for Next-Generation Wireless Wearables.' He remarked, "I feel this is more than I deserve. I am honored that this award has helped bring our research to the world's attention."

Professor Jung has focused his research on transforming electronic devices into flexible and stretchable forms to apply them to new fields. Conventional devices had limitations where their performance changed completely when stretched or bent. The functionality relied heavily on design; for instance, image quality would often drop or communication would disconnect based on the structure. Consequently, traditional semiconductors and displays were manufactured in rigid forms that were difficult to deform. His research secured flexibility and stretchability by reducing the thickness of devices to make them thin or by introducing variations in design and materials. Furthermore, he designed them to maintain performance by compensating the changes in electrical characteristics that occur based on shape. Semiconductors or displays created this way can be reborn as wearable or bio-implantable devices. Professor Jung explained, "A flood of healthcare devices is hitting the market, but they will eventually evolve into forms attached to or inserted into the body. We can develop devices that allow seamless data communication even during free movement."

Park Chang-hyun(Master’s student in the Department of AI Semiconductor Engineering), a researcher in the lab, said, "Our research isn't 'rigid,' so it’s fun. The members are also flexible and close with one another." Though originally from a different major, Park decided to enter graduate school after finding interest in experiments and research through a multiple major and undergraduate research experience. He added, "I have learned a lot from Professor Jung. It’s hard to look after everyone because our group is large, but I want to emulate his way of caring for us in many aspects."

Lee Kyung-joon(Integrated Master’s and Doctorate course student in the Department of AI Semiconductor Engineering), who dreamed of becoming a researcher in the display field, stated, "I joined the lab because I became interested in flexible materials after taking Professor Jung’s class." Lee said, "The atmosphere in the lab is great and there is strong harmony, making it a wonderful environment for research." The Flexible Electronic Device Lab received a Bronze Award at the 2025 4th Healthy Research Culture Contest for its culture of mutual respect.

"Find what you love and enjoy researching it"

To Hanyangians dreaming of becoming researchers, Professor Jung advised, "You must follow what you love unconditionally. Great results only come when you do it because you enjoy it." He added, "You should reflect on what you enjoy by thinking back to thoughts or hobbies from your younger years."

Lee also emphasized interest, saying, "You need an attitude of enjoying research." He explained the immense joy of succeeding after a week of failed experiments as ‘Resear-pamine’ (Research + Dopamine). Park noted, "The process of becoming a researcher is by no means short. You need self-conviction that you love it enough not to get tired of it."

'Desirable attitude of a scientist'

emphasized by young researchers

Professor Jung emphasizes the attitude of a responsible researcher and aims for research that contributes to improving the quality of life and realizing social values. He explained, "It is important to commercialize experimental results. If technology stays in the lab and ends with a paper, it cannot truly shine." He added, "I tend to step away from technologies that are too complex or have poor yields in processes and materials, making them difficult to commercialize." Professor Jung noted, "Young researchers, in particular, have a long time to research until retirement. You should approach research with a long-term perspective rather than just focusing on short-term problem-solving."

He also mentioned the importance of communication and collaboration. "It is difficult to solve problems solely through traditional electronic engineering approaches," Professor Jung stated. "I have invited researchers from other fields and sought out domestic and international research teams to request collaboration." Park agreed, saying, "There were many times I solved a block in my research by asking colleagues rather than struggling alone. Communication skills are vital because everyone needs help." He emphasized, "To do this, you must know your own research well and be able to explain it properly."

Professor Jung’s goal for this year is to explore ways to commercialize the technologies developed so far. "There are various ways to commercialize, such as starting a business, technology transfer, or joint development with companies," he said. Park, entering the final year of his Master’s program, is weighing his options between getting a doctoral degree and employment. He expressed his ambition, saying, "I plan to charge forward like a Red stallion in this Year of the Red Horse. Whatever path I take, I will succeed." Lee stated, "I want to achieve personal research milestones and plan to write many papers."
