From sweating together to sharing creative ideas
"Tiny practices": simple and easy activ페스타토토ies build the foundation for long-term service
Due to the early cold weather, the Hope 페스타토토 Leader Groups 'Dream Dream' and 'Hangaji,' along with the volunteer club 'HanMadang,' created a space for sharing warmth on November 12. The '페스타토토 ON(溫) DAY Campaign,' prepared by the three clubs, has spread the value of volunteering across 페스타토토 University through various activities. Student volunteering often remains personal and short-term. The event was planned to address the current state of student volunteering and promote simple, long-term forms of service.
Dream Dream: Connecting Everyday Activ페스타토토ies to Social Value
Dream Dream, which seeks easy volunteering, aims to lower the barrier for volunteer services. During the campaign period, Dream Dream raised donations by selling keychains they made themselves. Fundraising through accessory making is a representative activity of Dream Dream. Group President Kim Yeo-wool (Department of Chemistry, '23), addressing the common skepticism about small contributions, explained the meaning of the fundraising: "Even a small amount becomes a huge help for someone."
Dream Dream also ran a campaign to enhance awareness of single-parent families. They prepared a quiz related to single-parent households, drawing interest from participants. The donations collected from keychain sales are delivered to a charitable organization matching our planning theme. Kim said, "So far, we have delivered donations to child centers and youth independence centers in Seongdong-gu. This time, it will likely be a center related to single-parent families." She added, "The amount raised and the recipient organization can be found on our Instagram page(@hyu_volunteers_dreamx2)."
Tiny everyday actions can lead to social values as well. Kim said, "I am often asked if making keychains counts as volunteering." She replied, "Everyday activities, like hobbies, can be connected to volunteering. The purpose of our booth is to demonstrate it is possible."
Hangaji: Demonstrates the Power of Creativ페스타토토y
Hangaji takes the lead in improving environmental awareness on campus. Hangaji introduced the 'Tumbl:ON Project' to participants. The Tumbl:ON Project is an eco-friendly campaign that encourages the use of personal water bottles on campus. Using coupons distributed at the booth, participants can receive a 1,000 KRW discount when using a tumbler at five partnering cafes. Hangaji President Choi Min-su (School of Business Administration, '24) explained, "With sponsorship from the Seoul Volunteer Center, there is no separate burden on the partnering cafes. It combines environmental protection with the effect of mutual growth for local businesses."
A survey was also conducted to promote the tumbler washing machine installed on the 3rd floor of the Paiknam Academic Information Center and Library. Participant Hwang Min-seo (Department of Physics, '22) shared his experience, saying, "I would be willing to use the tumbler washing machine if it were installed in places with higher foot traffic, like Hanyang Plaza."
The driving force behind Hangazi’s activities is creative ideas. A representative effort is the 'Hangaji Box' collection project, which involves installing clothing donation boxes in dormitories and donating the items to the Beautiful Store(Charity organization). Choi said, "We are planning a project to lend out event supplies from the club. It will be an opportunity to reduce excessive use of disposable items and unnecessary consumption."
HanMadang: Rediscovering the Value of Home
HanMadang is a volunteer club officially authorized as a Campus Chapters Youth Program(CCYP) of Habitat for Humanity Korea. Continuing the values of Habitat for Humanity Korea, they focus on improving residential environments. HanMadang planned an event to reflect on the meaning of 'home' and raise donations. Yoo Won-ho(Department of Political Science and International Studies, '23), who wrote 'Recharge' as the meaning of home, shared, "I hope everyone recognizes home as a space for recharging." He added his thoughts on participating, saying, "It provided an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of home and the living environments of underprivileged communities."
HanMadang regularly conducts home repair volunteering for marginalized groups, including wallpapering and replacing light fixtures. They also participate in mural projects, bringing vitality to dark and dilapidated facilities. HanMadang President Yang Se-young (School of Architectural Engineering, '23) said, "While home repair volunteering might seem difficult, the individual work is not so burdening when many people gather." He encouraged participation, saying, "Beginners can easily adapt because they can learn from experts and seniors."
Yang mentioned, "I actually gain a lot more through volunteering." He stated, "Housing is an important value for everyone. While planning and operating the event, I was able to learn practical skills needed in daily life to improve the living environment."
Tiny Lights Gather to a Big Light
Kim, who oversaw the event, defined volunteering as a process of reconnecting with the society one belongs to, saying, "Volunteering awakens a sense of solidarity through interaction."
The keyword for long-term volunteering commonly mentioned by the three clubs was 'tiny practices.' Kim emphasized small, steady practices in daily life, saying, "A single grand action does not solve all problems." Using 'plogging' as an example, she explained, "The habit of people cleaning up a little bit every day is more effective than one single large activity."
Yang mentioned the importance of practice, saying, "The first step can be difficult, but once you try it, you realize it's not as big of a deal as you thought." He added, "If a single experience leads to a network of contacts, starting the next one becomes much easier."
How can one engage in small practices? Choi emphasized the attitude of not ignoring problems. He said, "Recognizing the overflowing trash cans during exam periods as a problem is the starting point of volunteering. Every attempt to identify and improve a problem is volunteering." Choi advised, "There is no need to think of volunteering as something special. We might already be practicing volunteering in our daily lives."
Jung In-young(Department of Physics, '22), a participant in the event, thanked the clubs for planning the event, saying, "This opportunity allowed me to regain interest in a topic I had forgotten about."
