On September 11, Professor Choi Jong-woo(Ryan) from the Department of Industrial Design at Hanyang University ERICA announced that a project titled Ventri—developed under the guidance of Professor Choi—has won first place in the Korea national round of the James Dyson Award 2025. The project was created in the ‘Design Engineering Studio’ course by Industrial Design students Son Min-hyung, Choi Yu-min, Hwang Seung-hyeop, and Park Jun-ho, along with Communication Design student Bae So-young.
The James Dyson Award is a globally recognized design engineering competition that emphasizes solving real-world problems and creating positive social impact. This achievement not only highlights the students’ creativity and practical skills but also showcases the expertise of their supervising professor. It is especially significant as this marks Hanyang University’s first-ever national victory in the Dyson Award.
The 신태일 토토사이트-winning project Ventri applies peristaltic pump technology, inspired by the movement of the human digestive tract, to address the issue of blood reflux. Its innovation and commercial potential had already drawn attention at CES(Consumer Electronics Show) Innovation 신태일 토토사이트s 2025, and it previously won a Silver 신태일 토토사이트 at both the Spark Design 신태일 토토사이트 in the U.S. and the Busan International Design 신태일 토토사이트, proving its excellence at an international level.
Professor Choi commented, “The Design Engineering Studio course emphasizes problem-solving that integrates engineering, technology, and design, rather than merely creating beautiful results. Following our recognition at the Red Dot Award, it is highly unusual for a single course to produce award-winning outcomes at such globally renowned competitions. This achievement is deeply meaningful as it reflects the passion and teamwork of our students.”
The team representative Son Min-hyung shared, “It is especially meaningful to win the James Dyson Award, as its values of ‘feasibility’ align with what I have always emphasized in design projects. This is not the end, and we plan to further develop the project with the goal of winning the international round and getting to commercialization.”
The winning team plans to reinvest the prize money of £5,000 from the national competition into further development of the project. They will compete against other national winners at the international round in October, where the final winners will be awarded £30,000 along with opportunities for commercialization. The team aims to enhance ERICA’s global reputation and expand industry and investor networks to drive real-world implementation.
Meanwhile, Professor Choi Jong-woo established the Future Form Design Lab (FFD Lab) at Hanyang University ERICA in 2024. Drawing on his experience leading innovative design projects at global companies such as McLaren (UK) and Logitech (Switzerland), the lab serves as a converged platform of design, engineering, and industry, equipping students with practical skills to compete on the international stage.
