Kang Ki-tae, currently employed at Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. (KOEN), initially aspired to become a sports administrator when he entered university. “Considering my personality and aptitude, I determined that securing a job at a public corporation in the sports sector would be the right fit,” he shared. “Work-life balance and job security were also key factors in my decision.”

On the other hand, Mr.Jung, now employed at Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), approached employment with a broader perspective, focusing on his desired lifestyle rather than targeting a specific job sector. “My primary goal was to secure employment as soon as possible,” he explained. “After receiving multiple job offers, I chose KEPCO because it has numerous business offices nationwide, allowing me to shape the lifestyle I envisioned.”

Jung echoed this sentiment, sharing, “I repeatedly practiced Grade 5 civil service exam past papers. By tackling more challenging problems, I gradually found the NCS easier to handle.” Ultimately, the key to passing the NCS written exam lies in analyzing the test format, identifying personal weaknesses, and preparing strategically.

Both alumni also provided practical advice on the public corporation interview process. Kang noted, “With the recent change in the hiring process requiring candidates to submit a self-introduction statement after passing the written exam, interview preparation has become even more critical. I strongly recommend researching the company and industry well in advance because interviewers can easily differentiate between candidates who have genuinely followed the company and those who have only prepared at the last minute.”

Jung emphasized the significance of information sharing. “During my job search, I joined a study group with peers preparing for the same job sector. Openly sharing information and resources was immensely helpful.”

Due to the unique nature of public institutions, candidates must carefully assess whether a public corporation aligns with their career goals and lifestyle preferences. Kang stated, “Public corporations are particularly well-suited for individuals who prioritize family life and work-life balance.” He added, “I have many hobbies and personal interests, so having a guaranteed evening schedule was essential for me,” recommending public corporations to those with similar perspective.

Jung shared a similar perspective, emphasizing, “The biggest advantage of working at a public corporation is work-life balance—there’s no overtime, and I can enjoy my evenings.” However, he also highlighted some considerations. “Although public corporations offer stability, employees may be required to relocate or work in regional offices. Those comfortable with regional assignments and seeking job security may find public corporations to be an ideal choice.”

Kang advised, “Job seekers should not make employment their ultimate goal. Whether it’s a public or private corporation, finding a company that aligns with one’s values is key.” Jung encouraged, “If you prepare systematically, Hanyang students are more than capable of securing a job at a public corporation. Don’t be discouraged by high competition rates.”
