"What value can you create within two weeks with 20,000 won?"
The “Value Creating Delightful Challenge Project” (hereinafter referred to as the Delightful Challenge) is a project that aims to create value within the constraints of 20,000 won and two weeks. It is required to generate value in terms of economic, social, academic, corporate, and university problem-solving aspects within the specified timeframe. To hear stories from within the Delightful Challenge, we met with planner Yoon Sun-kyung, the Principal Researcher of the Center for IC-PBL Teaching & Learning, and the top-performing team of the Delightful Challenge.
Part of the HY Learning Journey,
Value Creating Delightful Challenge Project
The Delightful Challenge originated from the concept of “HY Learning Journey” (hereinafter Learning Journey), introduced by the Center for IC-PBL Teaching & Learning since last year. Learning Journey signifies the educational experience of Hanyang students and aims to actively facilitate diverse learning experiences. Principal Researcher Yoon stated, "As part of the Learning Journey, which allows Hanyang students to have opportunities for various learning experiences at their own pace and journey, we planned the Delightful Challenge."
Seeing Differently through Reframing within limited resources and time, and Attempting Quickly
"The Delightful Challenge" drew inspiration from Stanford University professor Tina Seelig's "5 Dollar Project," where participants were tasked with generating profit within 2 hours using only $5. Similarly, the Delightful Challenge posed the constraint of 20,000 won and 2 hours to spark creativity among students.
Principal Researcher Yoon commented, "While constraints may present additional challenges, they can also foster creative thinking by encouraging unconventional ideas to overcome limitations." She further emphasized, "Innovation often hinges on how existing concepts can be reframed and combined in novel ways."
This year's theme for the Delightful Challenge is “Seeing Differently through Reframing and Attempting Quickly.” Thanks to the designated theme, more students were able to comprehend the intended purpose of the Delightful Challenge and participate in the projects. Principal Researcher Yoon stated, "Having a theme this year led to a higher overall understanding among participants," adding, "Teams that looked at the world from different angles and generated ideas accordingly, as well as executed them, increased."
The Delightful Challenge is divided into two categories: the Idea Category and the Value Realization Category. While the submissions are not initially categorized, the awards are distributed based on the outcomes. Principal Researcher Yoon remarked, "Each team has different strengths throughout the process of generating ideas and implementing them," explaining, "Teams that generated more significant meaning through ‘Seeing Differently through Reframing,’ are evaluated more favorably in the Idea Category, while those that created more meaning through ‘Attempting Quickly’ receive better evaluations in the Value Realization Category."
Lowering entry barriers and fostering a spirit of challenge... "Creating a foundation for growth"
Unlike other programs that require relatively long preparation periods, which can create high entry barriers for students, the "Delightful Challenge" program aims to assist students in taking on various challenges within a short two-week timeframe. Principal Researcher Yoon explained, "Unlike year-long programs, we proposed the 'Delightful Challenge' to allow students to try out something they might think, 'Why not give it a shot?' and directly experience it. This helps alleviate the students' burden and provides more students with opportunities to take on challenges."
The Delightful Challenge program was designed to convey the message that growth comes from experiencing and embracing challenges. Principal Researcher Yoon expressed, "Through this program, we hope that students can proactively identify their strengths and gradually overcome the fear of team projects." Finally, she added, "We also encourage active participation in 'Cross Mentoring,' a derivative program of Hanyang Academic Town LION. Through Cross Mentoring, participants can gain valuable learning experiences by sharing knowledge and forming a network among Hanyang students."
Team "Shipgae Yeolgae", taking one step closer to actual value realization with the production of a prototype.
A project started while falling in for the spirit of the competition.
The team “Shipgae Yeolgae (Korean for open easily), consisting of Ryu Min-wook (School of Mechanical Engineering, senior), Choi Dong-woo (School of Mechanical Engineering, junior), Kim Dong-gyu, and Kim Joo-hyeong (all from School of Mechanical Engineering, sophomore) participated in the project, resonating with the spirit of Delightful Challenge embodies. They came together as a team through the entrepreneurship and invention club “Buffalo” at Hanyang University’s School of Mechanical Engineering.
The team leader, Ryu, shared, "After finishing midterm exams, I received a promotional email about Delightful Challenge and decided to participate." He continued, "I formed a team with my club juniors to create a positive synergy among us." He added, "I was particularly drawn to the purpose of the project. The constraints of 20,000 won and 2 weeks actually made the project more enjoyable and interesting to work on."
Inspiration 토토사이트 배너만들기 Grandmother's Actions: Electric Screw Cap Opener for the Elderly
The "Shipgae Yeolgae" team attempted to create social value through the design and implementation of an "Electric Screw Cap Opener for the Elderly." Their inspiration, drawn from everyday family experiences stood out. Their achievement lies in providing a practical solution to the elderly in an aging society, offering assistance to those in need. The electric screw cap opener they devised can be operated with just one hand.
Ryu explained, "I got the idea from seeing my grandmother struggling to open medicine bottles on her own," and added, "I thought that many elderly people might be facing similar problems, so I came up with the idea of creating an electric screw cap opener to address this issue." He further noted, "Considering that elderly individuals may have varying strength in their hands, we designed the opener to be easily operated with just one hand."
They overcame the constraints of 20,000 won and two weeks through meticulous scheduling. Ryu explained, "We carefully planned out the schedule for prototype production, interviews, and report writing in advance and proceeded with the project accordingly." He added, "We invested most of the budget in a “gear motor” that provides sufficient power to the device, and for the rest of the materials required for production, we utilized on-campus facilities and equipment such as FABLAB's 3D printer."
Furthermore, they also received significant assistance from their major courses. Ryu stated, "I made extensive use of the modeling techniques I learned in my major course called Computer-Aided Design." In conclusion, he shared his impression of participation in the "Delightful Challenge" competition, saying, "It was a competition where we were able to learn a lot in a short period of time."
The team "MomentumMakers" won the Best Idea Award through a creative shift in perspective.
Turning Nearby Issues into Ideas
Go Hwa-young and Lee Yun-jae, (both from the Department of Organic and Nano Engineering, senior) teamed up to participate as the MomentumMakers team for the Delightful Challenge. They focused on the theme of this year's challenge, aiming to identify issues close by and view them from a different perspective. Go Hwa-young mentioned, "Having spent over four years together, we were able to smoothly proceed with this project as well." She continued, "While brainstorming ideas to enhance convenience for individuals with disabilities, we came up with an idea tailored for wheelchair users who face mobility challenges."
A Modular Ramp for People with Disabilities Made Using LEGO
The MomentumMakers team identified the problem of mobility for people with physical disabilities and sidewalks. They devised a solution by utilizing LEGO to create a modular ramp. Their inspiration stemmed 토토사이트 배너만들기 the desire to provide unhindered movement for wheelchair users, which fueled their design process.
Lee mentioned, "We designed a modular ramp using the principles of LEGO," and emphasized, "Our project was driven by the goal of making the modular ramp easily accessible to a diverse range of people." Furthermore, they stated, "We aimed to design it in a way that anyone who can fit LEGO pieces together could use it, ensuring the right to mobility for individuals with disabilities and contributing to their pursuit of happiness. This also promotes opportunities for marginalized groups and fosters social integration."
Their innovative approach garnered favorable evaluations. Yoon, the Principal Researcher, commented, "The use of a modular ramp created with LEGO not only empowered individuals with disabilities by granting them individuality but also challenged the perception of LEGO as mere toys. They conducted feasibility studies and assessed durability." She added, "Their consideration of material combinations for enhanced durability in subsequent ideas was particularly noteworthy."
Lastly, the MomentumMakers team shared their thoughts on participating in the competition. Lee expressed, "In our country, it's difficult to see wheelchair users, and the biggest reason is the challenges they face in mobility." She added, "We hope that our solution, the portable LEGO modular ramp, can provide assistance and support to wheelchair users." Furthermore, she emphasized, "We learned a lot through the process of ideation and expanding our perspectives. We hope that Hanyang students will take part in Delightful Challenge as well”.
