Reinterpretation of traditional painting ‘Baeksubaekbokdo,’ which connects traditional and contemporary sense of art
Hanyang University ERICA College of Design’s Department of Interactive Media Design(Noh Seung-kwan as head) announced that on May 22, Team Da-All, including Park Kyung-min and Choi Ha-yeon from Hanyang University ERICA as members, was chosen as one of four teams to be awarded a final exhibition opportunity in Sulwhasoo Culture Project 2, hosted by Amorepacific.
The Sulwhasoo Culture Project is a university-level creative program that reinterprets Korean traditional culture in a contemporary context, sharing the beauty of tradition in ways relevant to today. Under the theme ‘Creating and Sharing Korean Culture Ourselves,’ the project highlights young creators’ perspectives through new cultural subjects each year.
The theme for season 2 was Minhwa(Korean folk painting). Team Da-All presented the work Bokgado, inspired by Baeksubaekbokdo, ‘Painting of One Hundred Longevity and Blessings.’ The piece reimagines the symbol of bok(‘blessing’) through modern visual language. Combining brush drawing, mixed-media handwork, digital illustration, typography, and AI-generated video techniques, the team visualized one hundred variations of the character bok(福).
The completed video installation was arranged on multiple display panels in the form of Chaekgado, ‘Bookshelf Painting,' creating a large-scale artwork measuring 300 cm wide by 180 cm high. The work was praised for expanding the concept of ‘bok’ into a dynamic, timeless value through media that spanned from brushwork to generative AI visuals and light-based composition.
The exhibition was held from September 2nd to 14th, 2025, at Sulwhasoo House in Bukchon, Seoul. The piece attracted significant attention from visitors and industry experts for its experimental approach bridging tradition and modernity.
Professor Choi Ji-won from the Department of Interactive Media Design commented, “Bokgado harmoniously blends traditional aesthetics with contemporary technology, showing the students’ deep engagement with the essential values of design. It also exemplifies the path of educational guidance our department provides.”
Hanyang University ERICA’s Department of Interactive Media Design continues to explore new possibilities in media and interaction through the convergence of art and technology. The department aims to cultivate designers who combine artistic sensitivity with technical insight, enabling them to develop expertise across interactive media, motion graphics, animation, and game design while engaging actively with society.
