In the "2024 Laboratory Safety Content and Best Practice Contest," under the guidance of Professor Lee Seung-hyun of the Department of Chemical and Molecular Engineering, Im Joo-ah, Hwang Hyun-joo, Kim Ji-yoon, and Kim Soo-hyun (Sophomore, Department of Chemical and Molecular Engineering at ERICA Campus) won the Ministry of Science and ICT Award, the highest honor in the Prehazard Risk Analysis best practice category. They stressed the importance of laboratory safety management and presented model cases for making a safe laboratory.

You have won the Ministry of Science and ICT Award at the "2024 Laboratory Safety Content and Best Practice Contest." How do you feel?

Im Joo-ah: We decided to enter the contest after talking about participating in it with joy while studying. We are pleased to have won this great honor. We would like to thank Professor Lee Seung-hyun of the Department of Chemical and Molecular Engineering and the graduate student Kim Ha-young. Thanks to both of them, we were able to produce such a high-quality report. 

Kim Ha-young: I am very proud of the honor that my juniors have won. I pursued my bachelor's during the pandemic, so I wasn't in a place where I could get direct support from the school for entering contests. I feel great to have met these 엘클라시코 토토사이트 and produced good synergies together with this chance.

Why did you decide to enter the contest?

Hwang Hyun-joo: We first saw it in the school bulletin. So far the contests we found were focused on AI or humanity fields and it was extremely difficult to find a contest that we could enter. Then, we found this contest regarding the 엘클라시코 토토사이트 and chemistry so we thought we wanted to go for it.

Professor Lee Seung-hyun: Recently, disaster and safety became national issues. Management of chemical materials is strictly enforced by the government. In this regard, I believe that it was a great opportunity to raise awareness. 

You have won an award in the category of Best Practice in Prehazard Risk Analysis. What does "Prehazard" mean here?

Kim Soo-hyun: Prehazard Risk Analysis is a "system that prevents accidents by analyzing hazards in advance, prior to research and development." It starts when the lab manager investigates hazards in the lab and decides what needs to be done to prevent accidents. This protects the lab and those working in the lab, contributing to more active research and development.

What are the actual cases and in what regard are they hazards?

Kim Ji-yoon: If you do not check equipment in advance before the experiment, accidents might happen. In particular, when taking electrochemical measurements, if you don't wear protective gear properly, you can get a burn or get electrified. Hydrochloric acid used in 엘클라시코 토토사이트s can explode when boiled and can pose serious burns to the skin or damage to the eyes, so you must have an exact understanding of the properties of reagents used in an experiment before conducting one.

Professor Lee Seung-hyun: Equipment in our labs can rise to extremely high temperatures, and it has high voltage. Where did you put the most emphasis on this prehazard risk analysis?

Im Joo-ah: We focused on instructions for using the experiment apparatus and cleaning them. We thought that 엘클라시코 토토사이트 were quite familiar with properly handling reagents and wearing protective gear thanks to basic education, however, we thought that people were not paying so much attention to proper ways to use experiment apparatus and ways to clean them. We learned that there could be a big hazard in the process that follows the experiment. How did you prepare for the contest?

We did actual experiments to think about potential hazards and prevention methods, and we could have a more in-depth understanding of the hazards of apparatus or materials.

What was the most memorable and toughest moment in preparation for the contest?

Kim Ji-yoon: I remember the first time we visited the 엘클라시코 토토사이트. The professor and Ha-young gave us detailed instructions on tools in the 엘클라시코 토토사이트. I got to use many equipment that undergraduate students cannot use so it's memorable.

On the other hand, writing the report was the hardest part. It took a long to find safety regulations and laws that are newly updated. I thought that instructions were more accessible for safe experiments by 엘클라시코 토토사이트 workers.

Kim Ha-young: I remember the first encounter> I appreciated that students whom I met for the first time in the 엘클라시코 토토사이트 listened to my explanations well. It also reminded me of my undergraduate years. Students could learn so quickly and absorb everything with just one explanation. It's to the extent that it became perfect with just one or two revisions. I remember the entire process of communicating with my juniors.

What would you want to say to the professor and students as a last comment? 

Professor Lee Seung-hyun: After the pandemic, there are far fewer opportunities for juniors and seniors to get together. That's why this contest means more to us. Doing things with seniors, and producing great results, I think, will lead to great opportunities for our 엘클라시코 토토사이트. As much as they produced great accomplishments, I want them to be confident while sailing for their big dream.

Im Joo-ah: I want to thank the professor and Ha-young who gave great help in experiments. I believe that we could finish this safely thanks to them.
