"Take a Look as They Are and Communicate"

Researcher Lee made efforts to ensure that more students with disabilities could participate in the cultural exploration event. She said, "We considered geographical accessibility and the presence of convenient facilities to ensure that students with disabilities could participate in the cultural exploration without physical difficulties," and added, "We placed the highest importance on ensuring that students with disabilities could enjoy participating in cultural activities."

Unlike other times, this semester's cultural exploration was organized as an activity involving both students with and without disabilities. Researcher Lee explained, "To foster an inclusive campus for disability awareness, we wanted to create opportunities for students with and without disabilities to interact naturally." She continued, "Since this was the first time non-disabled students participated in the cultural exploration, we pre-educated them on how to interact with students with disabilities carefully," emphasizing, "It is crucial to view and communicate with each other as they are, regardless of disability."

Finally, regarding the cultural exploration for the next semester, Researcher Lee mentioned, "We will discover activities that do not overlap with existing cultural exploration activities and that various students with disabilities can participate in without difficulty."

"Disability is one of the characteristics"

Jeong Jin-kyu (junior, Department of Sociology) who is interested in on-campus activities, participated in this event as a non-disabled student. Jeong said, "Although I had a lot of chances to watch influencers with disabilities via YouTube and Instagram, I have almost no chance to gather with students with disabilities in my everyday life. This event is a chance to communicate with them."

Jeong, after the event, had a new vision about diversity. He stated, "Issues related to the living and mobility rights of people with disabilities, such as tactile paving and wheelchair-accessible pathways, stand out," and added, "There are still many insufficient areas at Hanyang University, so actions demanding improvements in these areas are important."

He specifically mentioned the recent Hanyang University festival as an example. Mr. Jung said, "Unlike non-disabled people who take festival participation for granted, there are many difficulties for people with disabilities to participate in school festivals," and added, "The open-air theater currently has insufficient wheelchair access routes, so an on-campus system guaranteeing the mobility rights of people with disabilities needs to be established."

He emphasized the need for a change in the way people view individuals with disabilities. Jeong said, "People with disabilities are not weak people but normal ones. I thought disabilities are inconvenient, making me think that helping them is a must, but I rather got help from them instead."

"Students with Disabilities Are Not Special People"

Hong Hyeok-min (freshman, Department of Korean Language and Literature) participated in this event out of his expectations of the musical. He faced discomfort while moving for cultural events. Hong emphasized the importance of communication by saying, "If discussed beforehand with students with disabilities, both the disabled who are not discussed beforehand."

Jeong replied about his wishes for non-disabled students: "Students with disabilities are the same unless they need help on specific occasions. Rather than treating them in a certain special way, take them as the same as the non-disabled."

Continued, "As they have their will to do something done by themselves, please ask them beforehand."
