A faculty-only cafe '브랜드토토' on the sixth floor of the New Administration Building
Hired developmentally disabled - one designer and four baristas
"We will do our social responsibilities at best through sustained operation, not a short-term event"
Recently, Hanyang University practiced its founding spirit 'love in truth and deed' once again. By opening a faculty-only cafe 'Ieumnuri' on the sixth floor of the New Administration Building, the university hired four baristas and one designer who are developmentally disabled. After a four-week test operation and machine introduction, the university held an opening ceremony on May 18. Ieumnuri is a result of cooperation with the Seongdong Community Rehabilitation Center ('center' hereafter). The center provides good human capital to the society and Hanyang University was able to hire the disabled and make a quality welfare environment.
On that day, President Lee said, "While on my way to the campus, white and pink flowers made a beautiful scenery. Just like that, I think the society will be more beautiful when it can pertain diversity and I wish Hanyang University can be a healthy and beautiful university like the flowers." We visited 'Ieumnuri' which practiced the social responsibility of a university.
Connecting Hanyang's Love and the World, '브랜드토토'
The cafe made its name by combining 'ieum', an HYU Lounge on the sixth floor of the New Administration Building and 'nuri', a center's brand. Also, by mixing 'ieum' meaning 'to connect' and 'nuri', meaning 'the world', the name shows a wish to make a cafe that practices Hanyang's love-practicing minds.
This Ieumnuri project started as soon as President Lee began his presidency. As a follow-up to the reorganization in the first half of the year, issues of space relocation and improvement were raised to promote communication between team leaders and team members. As a pilot project, the new headquarters' administrative department layout was changed, and in the process, a task force (TF) was launched to create a communication space using idle space. While seeking ways to utilize and revitalize the space, the cafe Ieumnuri pilot project was launched in late March in cooperation with the welfare center.
HYU Lounge Ieum, located in the New Administration Building, is fundamentally a place created to improve the productivity of administrative staff and to improve the work culture and collaboration culture. Team Manager Kim Tae-hyung of the Human Resources Team in charge of Ieumnuri, said, "We wanted to create a workplace where the productivity of our university's administrative staff can be improved and the happiness of our members, which is the president's pledge to take office."
Ieumnuri is also a case that showed the 'love in truth and deed' through staff member welfare improvement and hiring people with disabilities. Kim said, "So far, Hanyang has been thinking of ways to hire people with disabilities and to live with them and this cafe opening let us hire people with disabilities and make a good working environment. Ieumnuri is a case that implemented Hanyang University's founding spirit at the administrative level."
Together with the Ieumnuri cafe planning, the center had a barista cultivation process. As a result, four baristas were able to get a job. About that, Kim said, "Hanyang University will try hard to hire staff who can work in various positions and teams."
I felt "My child can be a member of society"
The four baristas at Ieumnuri are Go Pu-reum, Kwon Hyeok-joon, Lee Ji-won, and Choi Ji-woo.
Lee Sang-sook, a mother of Go Pu-reum, was a little bit afraid after hearing her daughter's job news. It was because her small body might give her fatigue. Lee explained the situation, "There are not so many places that people with disability can work. The center said she could give up when taking a test, but my daughter was passionate and said 'I want to continue doing' with shining eyes." When she received the news, Lee Sang-sook said, "All our family members are proud of her and she is too. I thank Hanyang University and the center for giving us such a chance."
Kim Hye-ok, the mother of Kwon Hyeok-joon, said, "My son has to study more than other people and should try more. Hence he feels hard whatever he does but after getting the news, we realize 'although he was late he can do whatever he tries' and proud of him."
Roh In-hee, the mother of Lee Ji-won said, "I first thought 'my child can be a member of the society' at first but before then I felt there was no place for her in this society. I wish this could be a chance for her to grow up as a society member and want to thank Hanyang University and the center. She wants to make coffee that gives a smile to people and will work hard."
This project can be called a cooperation between a university and the society that can form a local society's welfare cooperation network. Kim shared his gratitude.
"To open Ieumnuri many people helped and tried. I want to thank the university and staff from the center. This space is not just a short-term event but will be developed as a first step for the university to practice its social responsibility. But students, please understand this space is for staff members and we will try to make this into a space to share with various people. Please stay tuned!"
