Since 2007, Professor Park Ho-Bum, Department of Energy Engineering, appeared as the first and corresponding author in Science, an internationally renowned academic journal, three times, a sign that his academic worth in the field of green energy was recognized in and outside of Korea. In addition, he serves as an active editorial member in several international SCI journals like the Journal of Membrane Science Letters.

Last year, he made the world's top 2% win 토토사이트ers list, further elevating his honor as a scientist. To learn more about his story, we met Professor Park, who is working to build a cleaner environment and a carbon-neutral future society through membrane technology.

Tell us briefly about yourself.

I am Chair of the Department of Energy Engineering at Hanyang University where I have been serving since 2008. I focus on renewable energy and climate change technology at the Department of Energy Engineering, which in 2010 became the first undergraduate department of the same kind to be created. I work with hydrogen vehicles, batteries, carbon reduction technology, and others. Among them, I am win 토토사이트ing efficient energy conversion of environmental resources, centering on polymer engineering.

 

What has been your main win 토토사이트 area so far?

The most notable one is "membrane technology." Membrane technology is closely related to our everyday life. For example, it is used to selectively separate water from seawater to obtain drinking water, or to remove carbon dioxide from exhaust emitted by thermal power plants and various other industries. Membrane technology is a must for energy saving and environmental protection.

The biggest goal that I want to achieve through the research is not a remarkable reduction in carbon dioxide levels but helping people to realize "how much carbon dioxide is being produced in everyday life" and feel how serious that is so that they can reduce it.

Through fuel cells and carbon capture storage (CCS) technologies, I am win 토토사이트ing separation process technologies for energy conversion and saving. Ultimately, I have been studying sustainable energy conversion and green fields.

How is your win 토토사이트 area relevant to our everyday life?

Carbon dioxide is the main culprit of environmental pollution, yet it's still a difficult problem to solve. In 1989, an agreement for banning "freon gas" was made in Montreal to preserve the Ozone layer. Since then, it has taken 30 years" to recover the Ozone layer. That is a remarkably long period.

However, we can't impose a ban like this on carbon dioxide. If there are no global joint efforts, the level will rise and rise. If the carbon dioxide level passes just above 1,500 ppm, first you get sleepy. If you are constantly exposed to the level of 2,500 ppm, it could lead to paralysis of nerves or asphyxiation.

We all know that carbon dioxide emission is bad, but most of the time, we don't seriously consider "how much is being emitted and how exposed we are." I thought this is where we should act to feel and make change.

 

You are also win 토토사이트ing nanoporous and advanced materials. What contributions are these areas making in solving energy and environmental issues?

Material development is necessary to develop membrane technology. Very fine pores are needed to design materials, and this is where "nanotechnology" comes in.  Materials are designed and synthesized to pores in the nanoscale, which, in turn, is connected to membrane modules to make it into a device. It's a very challenging yet fun task.

The more win 토토사이트 on nanoporous materials and advancement materials are done, the greater the advancement of membrane technology will be. Membranes are materials that can selectively separate molecules or ions. Membrane technologies are used in fields like medical dialysis for patients with kidney failure and for artificial lungs.

Moreover, membranes are a core technology indispensable in fields like battery manufacturing, fuel cells, semiconductor ultra-pure water production equipment, seawater desalination, water treatment, and gas separation. All of the technologies mentioned play a crucial role in making a carbon-neutral future through green technologies.

 

How did you first start win 토토사이트ing this area?

The reason why I first got interested in "membranes" was because they are used "everywhere." It turns out it was incorporated into our everyday life here and there. I was drawn to this appeal, and even after going to graduate school, membrane material synthesis and membrane separation process were the first things I studied. I still have no regret about choosing this field.

What is your future goal?

Moreover, I want to conduct "research that helps ordinary people's lives." Engineering and science are deeply related to our lives. I want to help people to easily use technologies in this field and feel comfortable in life. Not just theoretically outstanding but also practical and helpful to our lives, that's the research I want to conduct.

Furthermore, I want to guide as many outstanding students who will walk the same path with me. It's easy to neglect teaching when you are too absorbed in research, however, I believe that education and research must go hand in hand. I hope that, through hard work with my students, our research field can shine even more in both industry and academia.

Lastly, could you give a word of encouragement for Hanyang students who will lead the world in various areas? 

I wish you to be full of curiosity. There are so-called "geniuses." We often think that they are born with it. Of course, they might have been born with genetically good hardware. However, a true genius is not simply someone with a high IQ but rather someone "full of imagination." And imagination comes from curiosity. I believe that anybody can become a genius in this way.

During my lectures, I often tell students that human imagination is not infinite. It's because most of our imagination comes true. Things that would only exist in science fiction thirty years ago are now out there.

The future you will live in will need more "creative people." I want you to think about what you like and why you like them. That's the beginning of curiosity. In the process of finding an answer to your curiosity, you will find yourself growing. Do not trust skeptics who gave up because they claim that it's never going to happen. I truly wish you could become someone who can change the world beginning with imagination!
