Participates as vice president of the Korean Council for University Education
Discusses the new government’s higher education policy direction

President Lee Ki-jeong of Hanyang University attended the 2025 Summer Presidents’ Seminar hosted by the Korean Council for University Education (KCCA) in Gyeongju on June 26. During the seminar, the KCCA leadership emphasized the need to expand funding for higher education to foster talent in the era of AI and digital transformation, promote regional co-prosperity, and strengthen universities’ competitiveness. They stressed that large-scale government investment is essential to support university-centered talent development.

Regarding one of the new government’s key pledges, “Creating ten universities like Seoul National University,” President Lee stated, “This initiative is part of regional balanced development. While policies such as RISE and Glocal University are also efforts to revitalize local areas, there are limits to fragmented responses from individual universities.” He continued, “We need to move beyond simply focusing support on non-metropolitan universities and shift toward a cooperative structure that breaks down boundaries between the Seoul metropolitan area and regional universities.”

President Lee also expressed the need for large-scale AI infrastructure investment in this era. “It is realistically difficult for individual universities to bear the cost of AI investment alone, and regional universities in particular face even greater burdens,” he said. “A new collaborative model that creates synergy between metropolitan and regional universities is necessary.”

He also shared his views on normalizing medical schools. “The key focus of medical school normalization should not be ‘there will be no academic flexibility’ but rather on ‘restoring proper medical education,’” he remarked. “We should not become too fixated on principles but instead join forces to discuss and achieve the normalization of medical education.”
